Nanny Hiring Options

Okay, so you've made the decision to hire a nanny and feel an in home nanny is the best option. What's next? There is a lot to think about. Are you going to use a do-it-yourself site? Ask friends or family for referrals? Use a nanny agency? All options are not equal. So many options - lets break a few down!

Do-It-Yourself Nanny Referral Websites

The do-it-yourself option is fine if you have the time. When you use these types of websites there is usually a low cost membership fee to gain access to nanny profiles. However, there are no guarantees that any of the nannies have an updated criminal background check, verified professional experience, or that they will show up to the interview you may potentially initiate. You will have to dedicate a significant amount of time to do the hiring yourself. It may take you a few months to find someone reliable and trustworthy. Consider this option as having to work another full-time job.

Family/Friend Referral

Asking a friend or family member for a referral is a great option. You may feel a lot better hiring someone that was referred to you by a trusted member of your inner circle. You may even feel a little laxed when it comes to the vetting process. The thought may be "Why should I waste time with background checks or an interview?" Sometimes this works - but sometimes not. Things may become a little too familiar. You may feel like if there is an issue, or if things don't work out, you'll have to explain yourself to your friend/family member. And in the end to not offend anyone, you "suffer in silence".

Nanny Agencies

Using a nanny agency to find a nanny can be very helpful and time-saving. The fees associated with using a nanny agency can be anywhere between $1200-$5000 or more. The price comes down to the type of nanny your are looking for; live-in/out, casual child care, type of referral you would like the agency to conduct, etc. Using a nanny agency means all of the work is done for you. The agency will provide full-cycle recruitment services to get you the best nanny in a limited amount of time. All you need to do is meet with the short-listed candidates and pick the nanny that you feel will best fit with your child's needs. When using a nanny agency, always confirm that they will do all of the background checks, and vetting necessary. The nanny provided should be professional, experienced, caring, trustworthy, and reliable.

Regardless of the option you move ahead with. It's important to always do your research and ensure the proper background checks are done before hiring a nanny. Making sure your child is safe and being engaged, in a fun environment, that encourages their development, is what matters.
